We're often asked why it's better to stay near the SFCitadel and not in the Castro. The main reason is that there's only one small motel in the Castro (Becks) along with a number of bed and breakfasts. So the choices are better near the SFCitadel.

Renoir Hotel is a gay friendly European boutique style hotel three blocks away at 45 McAllister St. Valet parking. 1-800-576-3388.

Hotel Whitcomb until recently was the Ramada Plaza International. Gay friendly modernized full service historic hotel with A/C, free WiFi, but no parking. Starbucks and a restaurant both off the lobby. 1231 Market Street, two blocks away. 1-415-626-5200

The Good Hotel is a newly redecorated budget hotel run by the upscale Joie de Vivre hotel chain (bigtime gay community supporters, very friendly). Hip, contemporary and, for San Francisco, cheap. Free high speed WIFI and I-Pod docking stations. $20 a day to park, unless you drive a hybrid... then it's free. The Good Pizza Parlor is downstairs. 112 7th Street, two blocks away. 1-415-621.7001

Best Western Americania is a sprawling pink motel that looks like it belongs in Miami, not San Francisco. Newly Retro redecorated. Possibly the only budget motel in SF with a heated swimming pool, saunas, and fitness center. Free Wifi, but paid secure parking. 121 7th St., two and a half blocks away. 1- 415-626-0200.

Best Western Carriage Inn is the smaller and more upscale across the street partner of the co-owned Americania. Walk across the street and use their pool, saunas, and fitness center. Free WiFi and plush robes, but paid secure parking. 140 7th Street, two and a half blocks away, 1-415-552-8600

IN THE CASTRO

Beck's Motor Lodge is the only Castro hotel... and it's an aquired taste. This very basic but tidy motel is also a night time cruise ground for out of towners who don't score in the nearby Castro bars. Free parking, but not known for friendly service. 1-800-227-4360g
